The 5 Types of Trade Show Signs (and Which One Your Booth Actually Needs)

Posted by Adam Chait on Jun 17th 2026

Most exhibitors don't realize that "trade show signage" covers five completely different product types, each designed for a different job in your booth. Picking the wrong one doesn't just look off. It means your brand message isn't reaching the right people at the right distance. When exhibitors ask us about trade show signs, the first thing we do is ask where the sign needs to be seen from: 10 feet away at aisle level, 100 feet away from across the hall, or on a table at a conference. The answer determines everything. At Displayit, we manufacture every type of trade show sign in-house at our Buford, GA facility, with custom-printed graphics included in every product. Below, we break down each sign type, where it performs best, and how to choose the right signage for your booth.

What types of trade show signs are there?

Trade show signage falls into five main categories. The right choice depends on your booth size, where you want the sign placed, and how much visual impact you need. We find that most exhibitors use a combination of two or three sign types rather than relying on a single piece.

Sign Type Placement Setup Price Range
Retractable Banner Stand Floor-standing next to booth, table, or in hallways 1 person, under 2 min $200 - $560
Backwall / Backdrop Sign Rear wall of a 10x10 or 10x20 booth 1 person, 10-15 min $800 - $1,550
Hanging Sign Suspended from ceiling above an island or large booth Requires venue rigging crew $800 - $3,000+
Backlit Sign Floor-standing or wall-mounted with internal LED lighting 1 person, 5-10 min $850 - $2,850
Tabletop Sign / Display Sits on top of a conference table or counter 1 person, under 5 min $150 - $400

The retractable banner stand is the most common type of trade show sign. It is the freestanding vertical sign you see at nearly every trade show, conference, and expo. When most people search for "trade show signage," this is what they have in mind. But the other four types each serve specific needs that a banner stand alone cannot cover.

Which trade show signs work best for a 10x10 booth?

In a standard 10x10 trade show booth, you have room for two to three signs without crowding the space. We have helped exhibitors at shows like NRF, AORN, and RSA set up 10x10 booths, and the combination that consistently performs best is a backwall sign covering the rear wall paired with one or two freestanding banner signs at the booth sides. The backwall does the heavy lifting for brand impression. The banner signs handle the details.

  • Budget setup (under $1,500): One 10ft backwall + one retractable banner stand at the booth entrance. The backwall carries your primary brand message and the banner stand highlights a product, promotion, or call to action. Total: $1,000 to $1,300.
  • Mid-range setup ($2,000 - $4,000): One pop up display with SEG graphics as the backwall, plus a branded table cover and one banner stand. The SEG pop up creates a seamless, frameless sign that tension fabric cannot match.
  • Premium setup ($4,000+): One backlit display as the main backwall sign, plus a backlit banner stand as a secondary accent. The LED illumination on both pieces creates a coordinated glow effect that draws attention from across the hall.

What are trade show hanging signs and when do I need one?

Trade show hanging signs are large-format printed fabric signs that suspend from the ceiling of an exhibit hall using the venue's rigging system. They are designed to be visible from anywhere on the show floor, which makes them the most impactful type of trade show signage available. They are also the most logistically complex.

We had an exhibitor at HIMSS last year who ordered a hanging sign for a 10x10 inline booth. The venue rejected the rigging request because hanging signs were restricted to island booths 20x20 and larger. We helped them pivot to a 10-foot backlit backwall instead, which delivered the same "stop and look" effect from 30 feet away without needing ceiling access. The lesson: hanging signs solve a visibility problem that only exists when your booth is competing for attention across 200,000 square feet of exhibit hall. For a standard 10x10 inline space, a backlit backwall or a well-designed pop up display achieves the same goal at floor level.

Factor Floor-Standing Sign (Banner Stand) Hanging Sign (Overhead)
Visibility Range 10 to 30 feet (aisle traffic) 100+ feet (entire exhibit hall)
Setup Self-service, under 2 minutes Requires venue rigging crew (additional cost)
Best Booth Size Any size, 10x10 and up 20x20+ island booths
Price $200 - $560 $800 - $3,000+ (plus rigging fees)

If you are considering a hanging sign, confirm with the venue that overhead rigging is allowed and get a quote for rigging labor before ordering. Some convention centers restrict hanging signs to certain hall sections or booth sizes. Our team can help you determine whether a hanging sign makes sense for your specific show. Talk to us before ordering if you are unsure.

Can I replace the graphics on trade show signs without buying new hardware?

Yes. Every Displayit trade show sign is built on reusable hardware, and replacement graphics are available for every model. A replacement graphic for a retractable banner stand runs $100 to $250, which is roughly half the cost of a new complete sign. For backwall signs, replacement graphics cost $300 to $700 depending on size.

We see exhibitors replace their sign graphics for three common reasons: a company rebrand, a new product launch that needs fresh messaging, and normal wear after one to two years of regular use. The hardware on a quality trade show sign lasts five or more years, so replacing graphics is always more cost-effective than buying new unless the frame itself is damaged.
